Food…it seems to control us in America. And judging from the obesity, diabetes, heart disease and hypertension incidence in the US, bad food is winning. How did we get here? Mainly by following the suggestions of the marketers, and not common sense. We buy almost everything in packages, instead of natural foods as provided by our Creator. Even our animals like cows don’t eat natural grass in a field anymore. They are herded into CAFO lots, and fed grain instead of grass, and shot full of antibiotics and growth hormones. Why? To increase milk production!

There is a better way, and it turns out that we have an enormous amount of research to substantiate that better way. That way is a plant-based diet of fresh fruit, vegetables nuts and grains. No matter what research you consult….Stanford, Harvard School of Public Health, UCLA….they all point to the Eden diet (Gen 1:29) given to man by his Creator. It is a diet of fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and grains…unrefined plant-based super-nutrition! That diet not only promotes health, but it prevents and even reverses disease….especially lifestyle diseases.

By lifestyle diseases, I am referring to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and caner. All of these diseases have a nutritional component in terms of their cause. And they all can be prevented in most cases by a plant-based Eden diet. We know for instance, that simple broccoli has powerful anti-cancer properties. The fiber in apples and steel-cut oats binds cholesterol, and removes it from the body. Fresh cranberry juice can stop a urinary infection. And the list goes on and on.

Genesis 1:29 says: “The fruit shall be for your food and seed-bearing plants” It turns out that the seeds that we eat, such as nuts lentils garbanzos, and hemp are loaded with nutrients that nourish the body, and prevent disease. Garbanzos have an abundant supply of a special protein, L-arginine, that the body uses to make nitric oxide, which relaxes your arteries and brings down to normal your blood pressure! Hemp, flax and walnuts have an abundant supply of omega 3 fats, which are important for brain health, and the health of the heart.

So how’s your diet? Are you choosing the foods given to us by our Creator, or are your choices being shaped by McDonalds and Tombstone Pizza? Fortunately, fresh unaltered foods are becoming more and more, available, and by choosing to use them, we can prevent much of the pain and suffering being experienced by our fellow Americans. And we can encourage our family members, neighbors and coworkers to do the same!

Make a decision today that you will provide yourself and your family with an abundance of fresh fruit, vegetables nuts and grains. Search the internet, and find recipes and video presentations for preparing tasty and nourishing dishes from these wonderful foods. Attend seminars and workshops that illustrate new ways to fix and enjoy these foods.

Remember that in order to thrive in a world where you are surrounded by bad choices and even worse food, you have to make a conscious choice to move beyond what everyone else is doing. You need a strategy for survival…one that takes into account the barriers to effective lifestyle change. Sit down and work on your strategy. When you hit a bump, work out plan B. Remember that your perseverance is the key to your overcoming the obstacles to change. Set your determination to succeed, and go forward. Don’t let anything stop you….you and your family will reap the reward of health, and peace of mind!
